Aging

There are so many things to look forward to when it comes to getting older! We have a larger extended family with children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. We know ourselves better and become more confident and comfortable.  But there are many reasons people dread getting older! One of the reasons need not be wrinkles!

We can start noticing the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet, laughter lines and other signs of aging surprisingly young, sometimes as soon as our early 30’s. Often we feel there is not much we can do to change that!

Is it just a natural fact of aging? Sure, there are expensive creams full of chemicals, Botox, and pricey cosmetic procedures that are unnatural, and we have all seen what happens when one of those goes horribly wrong!

The good news is this! While there is no way to remain wrinkle free forever, research has shown that the food we eat can have a significant impact on how well our skin ages over time!

Warning About Processed Foods

The key for healthy skin is to eat a varied diet that focusses on whole foods! We need to avoid processed foods as much as possible! Why?

  1. Processed foods contain chemicals that can be damaging to our skin.
  2. Processed foods are generally high in sugar.
  3. Sugar has been shown, long term, to be damaging for our skin.

Netherlands Research

While we have long known that our skin reflects our general health, recent studies have explicitly looked at the connection between diet and wrinkles.

A 2018 research study from the Netherlands, looked at the diet and wrinkles of 2,753 people aged 12 to 80. That is a VERY significant total population. It is also an excellent RANGE of ages!

The Netherlands research findings were as follows.

  1. The number of calories consumed was not linked with the formation of wrinkles.
  2. The food we eat is linked to the formation of wrinkles.
  3. Eating processed snacks increases the development of wrinkles.
  4. Eating a wide range of different fruits helped delay the onset of wrinkles.

Rather obviously, healthy eating in general reduces the number of wrinkles in later life!

Australian Research

An earlier research study from Australia looked at the nutrition and wrinkles of 453 people over 70 from the city of Melbourne.

The Australia research findings were as follows.

  1. A diet rich in vegetables, olive oil, fish and legumes lowered the chances of wrinkles in later life.
  2. Higher intake of dairy increased a person’s likelihood of developing wrinkles in later life.
  3. Consuming more foods with sugar increased development of wrinkles.
  4. Trans fats, including margarine increased wrinkle development.
