10,000 BCE – 1899 AD

Oldest Domesticated World Crop!

Yes, hemp is the oldest domesticated crop grown in the world. Hemp is among the oldest industries on the planet, going back more than 10,000 years to the beginnings of pottery. The Columbia History of the World states that the oldest relic of human industry is a bit of hemp fabric dating back to approximately 8,000 BC.

Hemp Timeline

Foundational for Civilization

8,000 BCE: Traces of hemp have been found in modern day China and Taiwan. Evidence shows that hemp was used for pottery and food as a seed & oil.

2,000 BCE – 800 BCE: Hindu sacred text Atharvaveda (Science of Charms) named hemp, a ‘Sacred Grass’, one of the five sacred plants of India.

Contagious Spreading Throughout World

600 BCE: Hemp rope is found in southern Russia.

500 BCE: a jar of hemp seed and leaves were found in Berlin, Germany. Use of hemp continues to spread across northern Europe.

200 BCE: Hemp rope is found in Greece.

100 BCE: China uses hemp to make paper. Hemp rope is found in Britain.

570: A Queen in France was buried in hemp clothing

850: Vikings from Norway, use hemp and spread it to Iceland.

900: Arabs in the Iran adopt technology to make hemp paper and call it the ‘King of Seeds’ in Persian.

Washington and Lincoln Embraced Hemp

1533: King Henry VIII, king of England, fines farmers if they do not raise hemp.

1549: Cannabis is introduced in South America in Brazil.

1606: North America was first introduced to hemp.

1616: Jamestown, first permanent English settlement in the Americas, grows hemp to make ropes, sails, and clothing.

1700s: American farmers in several colonies are required by law to grow hemp.

1776: The Declaration of Independence is drafted up on hemp paper by Thomas Jefferson.

1776-1875 For a century many founding fathers of the United States grew hemp and advocated its uses and benefits. This includes George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, etc.

1797-1899 The U.S. government has published numerous reports and other documents on hemp dating back to the beginnings of our country. Below is a list of some of the documents that have been discovered. These documents and many more are published online by the Yearbook of the USDA, by Gilbert H. Hicks; Assistant, Division of Botany, U.S. Department of Agriculture.

1797: Secretary of War, U.S.S. Constitution uses hemp

1810: John Quincy Adams discusses Russian Hemp Cultivation

1827: U.S. Navy Commissioner reports on water-rotted hemp

1873: Hemp Culture in Japan

1895: USDA and Hemp Seed

1899: USDA Secretary on Hemp

1840: Abraham Lincoln uses hemp seed oil to fuel his household lamps.
