Shocking Discovery of Brain Diabetes: Alzheimer’s and Glaucoma

How many people do you know who are challenged with diabetic issues, like neuropathy, calcification, kidney disorders, glaucoma and other eye diseases?

Have you ever wondered if you might also be borderline diabetic?

The “New Kid on the Block” is called Type 3 Diabetes or “Brain Diabetes”. A growing body of research suggests there’s a powerful connection between your diet and your risk of both Alzheimer’s disease and glaucoma. The scary news is that it has similar pathways that cause Type 2 Diabetes!

Alzheimer’s Patients Lack Brain Insulin

In early 2005 Alzheimer’s disease was dubbed “Type 3 Diabetes”. Researchers learned that the pancreas is not the only organ that produces insulin, our brain also produces insulin! The insulin produced by the brain is necessary for the survival of our brain cells.

A drop in insulin production in our brain may contribute to the degeneration of our brain cells. Studies have found that people with lower levels of insulin and insulin receptors in their brain often have Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers have now discovered that insulin does far more than simply regulating blood sugar. Our brain does not require glucose, but actually functions better burning alternative fuels, especially ketones. In fact, Dr. Rosedale believes that it is the constant burning by the brain of glucose that is primarily to blame for Alzheimer’s as well as other brain disorders.

Insulin is actually a “master multitasker”!  Insulin helps with neuron glucose-uptake. Insulin also helps with the regulation of neurotransmitters, like acetylcholine. Neurotransmitters are crucial for memory and learning.

For this reason, reducing the level of insulin in our brain impairs our cognition. Additional research shows that Type 2 Diabetics lose more brain volume with age than expected, particularly gray matter. This kind of brain atrophy is yet another contributing factor for dementia.
